About Universities

Australia is a knowledge nation, enabled by our 42 universities and higher education providers educating 1.4 million students each year. At $38.9 billion dollars, our higher education sector and its 130,000 employees are a key export for Australia, educating almost 800,000 international students in any given year.

While most indicators remain promising due to changing labour market conditions and growing tertiary qualification demand, our higher education sector is beholden to broader economic and policy conditions. A higher Australian dollar and measures implemented by Governments to address economic and quality issues are leading tighter visa rules that limit international student enrolments impacting a key revenue stream for Australian universities. Shifting demand across degree types, industrial challenges and the swift adoption of new courses amid the rise of AI have also created a rapidly changing environment for our universities to navigate.
