TAFE/VET
About TAFE/VET
Australia’s $12.7 billion technical and vocational education sector is made up of almost 11,000 institutions of varying size and scale, which employ over 50,785 staff. Our TAFE and VET systems are a crucial contributor to the national skills base and the single biggest contributor to addressing skill shortages in key industries across the nation.
The sector is subject to strict and growing regulations and elevated levels of scrutiny and monitoring to ensure quality, creating administrative challenges for smaller institutes. As our nation navigates changes in the labour market, our technical and vocational education institutes must respond rapidly, scaling up and back courses to respond to workforce changes and government prioritisation of funds.
The shift to digital delivery of courses over the recent decade has produced a net benefit for the sector, allowing rapid enrolment growth and the diffusion of operating expenses for those agile enough to respond to changes. Growth in real household discretionary income, an increasingly casualised national workforce and a recognised need to upskill has seen more part-time and mature-age students to enrol in technical and vocational courses – positioning the sector as an important partner in our nation’s prosperity.
